How to Build a Thoughtful Care Package

Sometimes the best way to show someone you care isn’t with big gestures or fancy gifts, it’s with a small box of calm, comfort, and kindness.

A care package doesn’t have to be complicated. It just needs to say: “I see you. I’m thinking of you. I wanted to make things a little softer.”

Here’s how to build one that actually helps.

What to Put in a Care Package

1. Something warm and wearable

Think soft socks, a light scarf, or even a sleep mask. Physical comfort goes a long way.

2. Something to drink

Herbal teas, calm cocoa, or a soft infusion. Choose blends that support rest and hydration.

3. Something to use

A hand cream, lip balm, or bath soak. Go for items that create a moment of pause.

4. Something to write in

A gentle journal or small notebook. It doesn’t need prompts, just space.

5. Something to read (or listen to)

Include a list of your favourite calming books, podcasts or articles. Or print a short story or poem.

6. A note from you

It doesn’t have to be long. Just a few lines that offer your support, with no pressure to respond.

When Someone’s Going Through a Lot

Sometimes it’s more than a rough week. Grief, burnout, anxiety, illness - these moments deserve care that’s a little more considered.

Here’s how to tailor your care package:

For Grief or Loss

  • Keep colours and scents soft and neutral
  • Avoid “cheer up” messaging
  • Include grounding items: tea, a hot water bottle, a weighted eye mask

For Burnout or Exhaustion

  • Go practical: a calming rollerball, an easy-to-cook treat, a ready-to-use bath soak
  • Focus on rest without expectation

For Postpartum Support

  • Choose nourishing, body-safe items
  • Include a journal, snacks, and a gentle card just for her, not the baby
  • These additions don’t change the care package, they deepen it.
